Columbia just had a stabbing in the 400 block of Union St. Drug dealing is all over the downtown. Police respond to many calls for robberies, thefts, fights, burglaries. If you have the blinders on so tight that you think these types of things don't happen here, then I wish you continued happiness in your clueless bubble.

Yes, unfortunately these things do happen here, partly due to the fact that Columbia has become a dumping ground. Despite what you fantasize, those cameras aren't going to solve the problem. I wonder how effective they've been in solving crimes - probably not nearly enough to justify the expense.

i agree. in order to take back this town. the codes and the police MUST step it up. CODES - WALK THE BEAT......POLICE, WALK THE DOWNTOWN AREAS AND PATROL - IN PAIRS!! MGMT, MAKE SURE THERE ARE ENOUGH OFFICERS ON EACH SHIFT. safety should be NUMBER 1.....

After having someone steal something from my property if they would help with the stealing, drugs, violent behavior and property damage I am all for it. If you do something and its video don't do it. I have no problem with them, I haven't done or did anything not to worry about it, have you?

I don't necessarily enjoy paying taxes, but I would agree to a tax increase of some sort if that money went directly to increasing the police presence in problem areas. That's not a panacea either, but it would help more than buying additional cameras.

The question is whether or not surveillance cameras help in solving or preventing crimes.
And no, I haven't done anything to worry about. Overall, I'm pretty innocuous, and that's precisely why I don't want some nameless, faceless so-and-so watching my every move.
